JISC is supporting a two day conference hosted by the University of Bradford, which will examine current good practice in achieving institution-wide sustainability in higher education. In particular, the conference will explore how institutional senior managers can meet HEFCE’s target to reduce 80% of the sector’s carbon emissions by 2050 through changes in funding models, student expectations, technology and other innovation opportunities.

Tomorrow’s sustainable universities

In particular, the conference will explore how institutional senior managers can meet HEFCE’s target to reduce 80% of the sector’s carbon emissions by 2050 through changes in funding models, student expectations, technology and other innovation opportunities.

JISC is co-organising the second day of the conference ‘Creating and Leading the Sustainable Campus’ with the Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE) and the Higher Education Environmental Performance Improvement (HEEPI) project. This second day will focus on leadership for sustainability; scenarios for tomorrow’s campus and learning methods, their environmental implications; sustainability in the curricula and other aspects of the STEM subjects which Government is placing at the heart of its plans for future higher education.

Head of Innovation at JISC, Sarah Porter will provide food for thought on the role of technology in enabling the higher education campus to become more sustainable in a panel session with HEFCE’s Deputy Chief Executive, Steve Egan and Professor Peter James from the University of Bradford.
