This JISC 10 conference session will explore the benefits, challenges and solutions to adopting e-portfolios. Guest presenters will start by sharing their experiences of how they implemented e-portfolio-based learning across their institution, for either learners or staff. Next, delegates will take the lead using an interactive ‘spin the wheel’ to quiz the presenters on a range of topics and, in doing so, gain useful advice for using e-portfolios for their own purposes. The session will close with a summary, exploration of the next steps and pointers to useful JISC resources.

Effective practice with e-portfolios: How can the UK experience inform practice?

This paper introduces the background to the JISC work within the e-portfolio domain in the UK and presents an overview of past and current activities and the drivers for these developments. This is followed by a review of JISC’s approach at drawing out the learning and implications for e-portfolio practice from this extensive collection of work and its dissemination. Effective Practice with e-Portfolios

e-Portfolios are not a new concept. In various guises, digital presentations of skills and competences, online records of achievement and action plans with opportunities for reflection have been in use in education for nearly a decade. Tools and systems built for these purposes are now numerous. So what is new about e-portfolios?

Session abstract

Using e-portfolios effectively, universities and colleges are able to prepare students for study prior to enrolment, provide enhanced and personalised learning opportunities, enhance reflective practice, support employability, and support staff in their professional development and appraisal processes. As a consequence e-portfolios can improve student retention, widen participation and support the development of reflective, independent lifelong learners who are able to better plan for their professional and personal development.

This session will explore the benefits, challenges and solutions to adopting e-portfolios.
