Online virtual environments present exciting opportunities, particularly in terms of enhancing interaction between digital content and diverse users and between users themselves. Our JISC funded project involves presenting our digital collection of material from and pertaining to the Pompeian Court built in the Crystal Palace in 1854 through an online, 3D model which is presented in the popular online virtual world, Second Life. This medium was chosen specifically because of the ways in which its format and function allowed us to marry the theme of the content with the mode of delivery. Second Life, and other social, virtual environments also allow users to access material in a variety of engaging ways tailored to different needs, particularly through the possibilities for the creation of learning activities and use of mixed media. As well as discussing the ways in which these virtual environments may be of benefit in education, we will also briefly discuss issues which may present obstacles in getting these new technologies into the classroom.
