JISC Question Time: Student experiences of technology

The rapid adoption and widespread use of Web 2.0 technologies such as podcasts, blogs, social networking sites and virtual environments is already transforming education and at a pace few could have predicted. For students, practitioners, managers and policy makers alike, the implications are enormous as all come to terms with the impact of new, exciting, but also challenging, technologies and attempt to harness them for the benefit of learning, teaching and research.

As part of its ‘Student experiences of technology’ campaign, JISC will be hosting a special ‘Question Time’ debate session at its annual conference in Edinburgh on the 23rd March. The session will be hosted by Guardian Education’s editor Donald MacLeod, and will bring together an expert panel with a range of perspectives on the implications of new technologies for higher education institutions in the UK. Donald will be chairing a panel including:

  • The student’s perspective - Sue Beck, Student, University of Northampton
  • The lecturer’s perspective - Rob Howe, Head of Learning Technology & Media, University of Northampton
  • The senior manager’s perspective - Professor Jeff Haywood, Vice Principal Knowledge Manageement, Chief Information Officer, Edinburgh University
  • The policy perspective - Sir David Melville, former VC of the University of Kent and Chairman of the Committee of Inquiry into the Changing Learner Experience

This special event will allow attending delegates to pose questions to the panel and take part in discussion and debate around the theme of Student Experiences.

Question Time Programme

This Question Time debate is designed to put forward key perspectives on some of the major issues associated with the impact of new technologies on learning and teaching. The format uses the familiar BBC approach, with audience participation and discussion being paramount, but with the emphasis also on the panel of experts giving their own experiences as examples of wider issues, experiences and challenges.
