Mind the gap...understanding the tensions between the institution and the learner

Abstract     Early work in the JISC Learners’ Experiences of e-Learning (LEX) programme suggests that there is a wide gap between learners’ expectations of the use of technology in their studies and a post-16 institution’s ability to understand and respond to their needs. Key to this is the problem for institutions, whether higher education, further education or adult and community learning, in balancing issues such as data protection and equality of access with demands for more personalised, empowered, learning.
Aims and objectives
  • Share the final outcomes from the second research phase of the LEX programme which completes in March 2009
  • Explore how the disjunction between the learners’ and the institution’s objectives already affects their relationship, using real case studies and role play to give participants an opportunity to reflect on the issues emerging from the JISC LEX programme, eg institutional and course level practices, change and transition, preferences, choices and patterns of use
Who should attend? This session will be of interest to those with responsibility for the delivery and management of learning and teaching, and IT networks, as well as those involved with implementing and supporting e-learning in their institution.
Approximate capacity of session 50
