JISC Conference 2009 Environmental Standards
JISC is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of its events. For the JISC Conference 2009, the largest JISC event of the year, it is committed to the following actions:
Working in partnership with the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) to reduce the environmental impact of the JISC Conference 2009:
- The EICC is fully accredited with the ISO14001 British Standard for Environmental Management and have won several prestigious green tourism awards for their commitment and delivery of their own sustainable events programme 'Plan-It Green'
- The EICC endeavour to minimise waste using the 3R's principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle as much as possible
- All food prepared by the EICC caterers, Leiths, is freshly prepared on the premises from locally-sourced ingredients. The EICC only source food within 200 miles of Edinburgh
- The EICC actively encourages the use of shared public transport for all their staff, clients and delegates. The venue is easily accessible by public transport and on foot
Working in partnership with Sounds Commercial Ltd and Exhibitions & Displays Direct Ltd, the exhibition stand contractor, who adopt the following practices to reduce the impact on the environment:
- All exhibition stands at the JISC Conference 2009 will be fitted with low voltage spotlights as standard to reduce energy consumption
- Any carpet used for the JISC Conference 2009 exhibition will be made from eco-friendly materials, enabling it to be recycled after use
- All company vehicles are regularly serviced and run at the correct tyre pressure, to maintain minimum Co2 emissions and ensure fuel efficiency
- Exhibition fascia boards will be made from recyclable card
The organisers of the JISC Conference 2009 will also be doing the following:
Reducing the size of the conference programme guide to minimize the use of paper and print it on recycled paper
- Eliminating the provision of a delegate bag
- Eliminating the provision of paper note pads, encouraging delegates to bring their own or use laptops, handheld devices for digital note-taking
- Providing digital alternative to delegate bag paper inserts, to reduce paper waste
- Recycling all paper and card graphics/signage that are produced specifically for the conference
- Using portable and re-usable display materials
- Providing recycling points for delegates and exhibitors around the conference venue
- Providing a completely paper-free, online delegate registration process
- Encouraging delegates to use public transport and car-share were possible, by providing detailed information on the conference website
- Encouraging exhibitors to reduce the number of printed publications and leaflets distributed from their stands to reduce the amount of wasted paper
- Discouraging the practice of mass distribution of paper handouts, presentation slides etc. during sessions by speakers. All session recordings, presentations and any related materials will be made available online where possible
- Encouraging delegates to place their name badge in a recycling bin at the end of the conference
- Encouraging delegates to place any unwanted conference guides in a recycling bin at the end of the conference
