Objectives of the session
- Understand the capabilities of what a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) can offer; share VRE phase 1 experiences
- Set a context and starting base for VRE phase 2
The legacy of VRE phase 1 and towards VRE phase 2 and 3 From an overview of the recently-completed phase 1 (exploratory phase), to an introduction to the current phase 2 (user engagement) and on to a forward-look to the future ‘bridging phase’, Matthew Dovey will set the context for the presentations which follow.
Definitions and Characteristics of VREs By the end of March 2007, VRE phase 1-funded projects will have all reached completion. The term ‘VRE’ has now become widely established. David de Roure will set out what VRE is, is not, and can be.
VRE user engagement How VRE’s can support researchers in their research practice (one of the major aims of VRE phase 2). Roger Slack will demonstrate a case study of the Memetic VRE, highlighting lessons learned. He will provide a perspective on future activities and possibilities within the VRE phase 2 programme.
