Objectives of the session

Data Protection, Freedom of Information, Environmental Information Regulations… the list of legislation regulating how institutions manage and provide access to the information they hold is seemingly endless.  But what impact is compliance with such legislation really having on institutions and at what cost?  Have we got the balance right? Are we paying too high a price for ‘gold-plating’ our compliance measures, or are we risking our assets and reputations by cutting corners and hoping we get away with it?

This presentation will explore the findings of the second annual survey conducted by JISC into the impact of the Freedom of Information Act and other legislation on our institutions. It will move beyond anecdotal evidence to provide a definitive picture of the challenges faced by the sector, and the proportionality and success of the measures institutions are adopting to meet them. It will also introduce, and provide a brief tour of, an innovative online tool, the JISC Information Governance Gateway, developed for JISC by Liverpool John Moores University as an invaluable resource for all institutions engaged in this area.

The objective of this session is to provide delegates with an accurate and informed assessment of the impact that compliance with information governance is having on the sector, and a clearer picture of the appropriateness of their own institution's approach.
