Objectives of the session
There is an increasing realisation that long-term preservation and
continued access to digital resources are of strategic importance to
institutions. JISC funded the Supporting
Digital Preservation and Asset Management in Institutions programme in
2004 to raise awareness and allow colleges and universities to gain
hands-on experience of digital preservation issues. Eleven projects were
funded under the programme, aiming to provide institutions with a range of
practical outcomes - both technological and organisational. The
programme is expected to complete in early 2007.
The main objectives of the session are to present the outputs of the
above-mentioned programme and share with the community the lessons learnt.
The Digital Curation
Centre, in its capacity as a centre of excellence on digital
preservation and digital curation, has been asked by JISC to undertake a
synthesis study to bring together the results of various projects under the
programme. Maureen Pennock will present the outcome of the study and
introduce a range of tools, prototype services and examplars that can
be used to help institutions tackle the challenges of digital preservation.
The session will also consist of a short introduction to
JISC's broader digitial preservation actitvities by Helen
Hockx-Yu, programme manager at JISC.
The outcomes of the session will be a greater understanding of the
issues that institutions face to ensure the long-term availability of
digital assets, and how JISC has funded programmes to help institutions
manage and preseve digital information. It will also provide pointers to
useful tools and resources produced by the Supporting Digital Preservation
and Asset Management in Institutions programme.
