UCISA 2006 annual conference
At this year's UCISA conference JISC will be highlighting three major initiatives.
For the last two years JISC has devoted a significant part of its development funding to access management issues. Many different solutions and scenarios have been investigated. The outcome is to implement a federated access management system based on the internationally-recognised Shibboleth technology.
In September 2006, JISC will launch the UK Federation as a UKERNA Service and the preferred access management system for UK further and higher education institutions. Educational institutions throughout the UK will be invited to join the UK Federation and adopt the use of related technologies such as Shibboleth. This will allow institutions to attain the goal of single sign-on to resources, reducing the need for multiple passwords for multiple resources in multiple domains.
JISC is changing the world of authoritative e-resources through its investment in digitising content from some of the UK’s greatest collections from the 18th-century to the present day. The first of these e-resources will be available from September 2006. To support this JISC has produced a technical brochure aimed at IT Managers and Directors that explains any technical issues that might arise within institutions.
