Applicants are invited for the position of Marketing Officer in the newly formed JISC Advance.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with substantive experience within the marketing field to join the central JISC Advance team. You will be responsible for creating, managing and ensuring effective delivery of a communications and marketing plan for JISC Advance and promotion of the services within JISC Advance to all stakeholders (including government) within the Higher Education community, and also the Further Education and Skills sector.

The postholder should possess a first degree or provide evidence of equivalent study or work experience and preferably with a professional marketing qualification. Candidates must also have experience of marketing within the post compulsory education sector (i.e. further or higher education) and have a successful track record of being able to work as part of a team, utilising excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Main Job Purpose

To create, manage and co-ordinate the delivery of all aspects of marketing and communications on behalf of the JISC Advance Services. To contribute to the development of the overall strategic marketing plan of JISC Advance.

Promotion of the Services to all stakeholders of JISC Advance (including government) within the Further and Higher Education community, and also the Skills sector.

Responsibilities and Tasks
  • Act as a key contact for all JISC Advance communications and marketing activities, and build relationships with JISC Advance services, key stakeholders, JISC Communications and Marketing and appropriate press and media contacts
  • Develop an understanding of key audience groups, identifying their particular needs and characteristics, together with ways in which communications and marketing might respond to these needs.  Liaise with the Executive Director for External Strategy in developing messages for diverse audiences.
  • Work with the JISC Advance Executive Director for Marketing to fine tune the marketing work plan to ensure that outputs, from this plan, are high quality, professional and consistent with brand guidelines.
  • Write and edit copy (e.g. interviews, case studies, leaflets, flyers, information brochures, posters and written reports) to promote the work of JISC Advance to its stakeholders (working with JISC Advance services to gather information required)
  • Initiate, write, edit and distribute press releases, web news items, briefings, e-bulletins etc, as appropriate and respond to enquiries from journalists and press officers
  • Coordinate all advertising, publishing and web marketing activity and materials, in line with the marketing strategy and work plan
  • Identify market opportunities for ad hoc promotions based on appropriateness or changing market needs and advise JISC Advance colleagues on the need for action
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues from JISC Communications and Marketing team based in Bristol (responsible for JISC corporate comms) to maximise efficiencies and coordination of activity and messages
  • Be an effective ambassador for JISC Advance by accurately promoting and reflecting the full range of JISC Advance interests and activities
  • Ensure appropriate media training is provided for JISC Advance colleagues when required
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of marketing and communications, providing timely reports to the JISC Advance Executive Director for Marketing

  • Education to degree level (marketing/business degree desired)
  • Membership of Chartered Institute for Marketing
  • Knowledge of the further education, higher education and/or the skills sector and current issues surrounding these in relation to key themes and funding pressures
  • Ability to deliver marketing activity in a timely manner whilst under pressure with the ability to juggle priorities as they change
  • Writing and editing copy: often synthesizing material from various sources or writing new materials to produce accessible, accurate and readable materials
  • Working with design agencies to produce marketing collateral
  • Working with new technologies, web and social software, and multimedia formats to enhance the marketing mix and delivery of messages to stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal skills whether face to face, via email or telephone in order to build relationships (with people at all levels) and exhibiting persuasion, negotiation, tenacity and diplomacy skills to achieve objectives
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills (with attention to detail and accuracy)
  • Ability to both work alone and as part of a team well, adopting flexible approaches
  • Good IT skills – familiarity with MS Office and DTP tools
