Information for Higher and Post 16 Education sector volunteers for membership of the JISC sub-committees

JISC is an advisory committee to the UK post 16 funding councils (further and higher education) and research councils. It is responsible for funding IT services and providing innovation in the use of IT for learning and teaching, research and administration. Its budget (core and capital funding) is around £100m per year.

JISC policy is determined by committees of volunteers, mostly drawn from the community, with relevant management and technical expertise. A nominations committee is responsible for identifying suitable members. JISC advertises annually for forthcoming vacancies on sub-committees in the national press for new applicants interested in becoming members of JISC committees and contributing to the work of the JISC to the benefit of UK education and research. It is envisaged that the next annual advertisement will be issued in late January 2011. JISC also accepts expressions of interest throughout the year. If you would like to make an expression of interest please email nominations@jisc.ac.uk

Membership of JISC and its committees is on an ad-hominem basis and is open to those who work in publicly-funded, and other, organisations involved in education and research in the UK and internationally and to anyone with the relevant skills (provided there is no conflict of interest). Membership is selected according to the balance of skills, knowledge and experience and diversity identified that is needed, including regional, ethical and sectoral balance.

For JISC governance and the role of committee members, see JISC Members Handbook

JISC sub-committees usually meet three times a year (mainly in London) but members are also expected to contribute to other activities such as working groups and the evaluation of proposals. The number of days committment per year is therefore likely to be 8-10 days. Travel and subsistence expenses are paid but the posts are unpaid. The period of appointment is for four years intially. This may be renewed for a further four years at JISC's discretion.
