Reshaping Jisc
On the 1 December 2012 JISC became Jisc, a registered charity and was established as a company, making the organisation a separate legal entity.
This change and milestone in Jisc's history is in response to the Wilson review carried out by HEFCE in September 2010. The review was published in February 2011 and recommended that, due to the breadth and complexity of our activity, we must simplify and reshape our structure, processes, projects, programmes and governance.
This will ensure that we can be both more effective and more efficient in serving and helping advance UK research, education and the student experience through the use of modern digital technology. We are making some changes to the funding of innovation support centres and are piloting a co-design approach to innovation that involves our partners more closely.
One of the principal findings of the review was that there is no comparable body to us within the UK, and our international reputation as a strategic leader and partner is outstanding. The review concluded that:
‘JISC is an invaluable national resource which has evolved in response to increasing demands over 20 years’.
