"The function universities perform is no longer contained within the campus. There is an ever-growing environment of learning, research and knowledge exchange of which universities are one part. In the UK universities become edgeless geographically as they start to provide education outside the UK. They are becoming edgeless in research as innovation depends increasingly on collaborations between institution as and among academics.
The university is becoming defined by its function – provider and facilitator of learning and research – not its form. Its influence, reach and value extend beyond its UK campus.This change is being driven by people finding new ways to access and use ideas and knowledge, by new networks of learning and innovation, and by collaborative research networks that span institutions and businesses. "
